The Snow Lake and Hispar La Trek is one of the most spectacular, remote, and challenging high-altitude treks in the world. It combines the surreal beauty of Snow Lake with a crossing of the mighty Hispar La Pass (5,151 meters / 16,900 feet), linking two massive glacier systems.

Trek Overview

The Snow Lake and Hispar La trek is located in the Karakoram mountain range in northern Pakistan. It connects the mountain regions of Baltistan in the east and Hunza in the west through a remote glacier route known as the “highway of ice.” The trek begins in Skardu (Baltistan) and ends in the Hunza Valley, passing through the Biafo Glacier, Snow Lake, and Hispar Glacier. These glaciers together stretch over 120 kilometres, making them the second-longest glacial system in the world outside the polar regions.

Snow Lake – Hispar La Trek takes you to a remote and unspoiled region of the Karakoram mountain rangewhere very few other trekking groups go. Being a remote region, it serves as the last stronghold for many wild animals, including the Himalayan bear, ibex, Markhor, and the snow leopard. The snow Lake Hispar la trek trails are so remote that it is unlikely you will see other trekkers along the way. Snow Lake, Hispar La, and Biafo Glacier Trail are also known as the highway of ice, connecting the two Great mountain kingdoms, Hunza in the west with Baltistan in the east.

Snow Lake hispar la trek is arguably the most challenging and rewarding trek in the Karakoram range for trekkers and mountaineers. There are places where you have to rope up. Occasionally, you must climb over the moraine ridges covered by loose rocks, traverse several tributary glaciers and cross glacial streams. Snow Lake – Hispar La trek offers the most stunning mountain scenery and idyllic campsites on earth.

Trango Adventure has been organising the Snow Lake Hispar La trek and other adventure holidays in Pakistan for 40 years. We have thoughtfully created a 22-day-long snow lake Hispar la trek itinerary, which is the best in terms of enjoyment, safety, and acclimatisation. The snow lake trek duration can be shorter or longer, depending on your trekking experience at high altitudes and weather conditions.

Islamabad International Airport is the nearest international airport to arrive at for the Snow Lake – Hispar La Trek. Our representative will meet and greet you at the Islamabad International Airport, then transfer you to the group hotel, followed by a group briefing in the afternoon about the snow lake trek. The next day, you will take a spectacular mountain view flight from Islamabad to Skardu. On route, you will see the great Nanga ParbatK2, Gondogoro La circuit, Baltoro Glacier, and the other stunning snow-covered peaks of the Karakoram range. After checking into the hotel, the rest of the day is for sightseeing and preparation for the snow lake trek in Skardu.

Skardu is the capital of the Baltistan region of Pakistan. It is the getaway to Snow Lake – Hispar La Trek, PakistanK2 base camp trek, K2 basecamp, Gondogoro la trek circuit, Baltoro trek, and Broad Peak. Baltistan was one of the largest kingdoms of the Himalayas. People of this ancient mountain kingdom speak the Balti language, similar to the Tibetan language in Tibet. In Skardu, Trekking and climbing groups usually do their final purchasing and top-ups for their trekking journeys. Spend two days in Skardu, then drive along the mighty Indus, Shigar, and Braldu rivers via the Shigar Valley to arrive in Askoli. Askoli is the last village of the spectacular Shigar valley before you begin trekking into the wilderness of Karakorum.

After spending your first night in the camp under the starry canvas, the snow Lake – Hispar La Trek starts, following the K2 Base Camp trail and then turns west onto the Biafo Hispar glacier. The trail follows loose rocky moraine ridges on the Biafo glacier for the next few days. You will stay at the Namla and Mango camps before arriving at the Biantha campsite. Today is a free day to rest, which will help your body get used to the high altitude. Resting and acclimatisation days are vital during the snow lake trek. It also enables you to take a splendour of some of the most scenic mountains, which you can not find anywhere else in the world.

From the Baintha camp, you climb back onto the Biafo glacier and follow the glacier (known as the highway of ice). Walking on this part of the glacier is relatively easy compared to walking on the loose rock earlier on the trek. After resting at Marfogoro and Karfogoro, cross the snow lake and hike to hispar la, where you set up your camp at an altitude of 5,151m and sleep in your tent. From the top of Hispar La, you have fantastic views of the Biafo Glacier, the snow lake, the Ogre, Hispar Glacier, and other snow-covered mountains of Hunza Valley.

Having reached the highest point of your journey on Hispar La pass, cross Hispar La and descend into Hunza Valley to complete the traverse. Cross the hispar la and trek to Kani Basa, Bakhtur Baig, and Shigham Baris. From Shigham Baris, hike to Bitenmal by walking on the side of the glacier. Pass through the meadows with streams and wildflowers to reach the Bitenmal campsite. Bitenmal is the summer home of shepherds from the Hispar village. Here you will find the huts of locally friendly shepherds. They may offer you some fresh milk and dairy products.

Night stay at Bitenmal and the following day trek to Hispar village. Hispar village is the first civilisation you will see since you left Askoli. Enjoy the last camping night of your snow lake hispar la trek in Hispar village, and the next day, drive to Karimabad. Karimabad is the capital of the ancient Hunza Valley. Explore Karimabad by visiting the local Bazar, UNESCO-listed Baltit and Altit Forts. Baltit Fort was built by the Balti people from Baltistan 700 years ago when they travelled to Hunza via Snow Lake. Baltistan had a cultural and ethnic relationship with the Ladakh territory to the east. Not surprisingly, the structure of the Baltit Fort was influenced by Ladakhi/Tibetan architecture, with some resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa. You will notice that the Hunza region’s language and culture are very different from those of Baltistan.

After the sightseeing of Karimabad, drive along the Hunza River on the kkh (Karakoram Highway) towards Gilgit with Rakaposhi (7,788 meters) in the backdrop. Gilgit is the capital and the administrative city of the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. Night stay in Gilgit, and the next day, take a mountain view flight back to Islamabad to spend the last evening in Pakistan. The following morning, we will transfer you to Islamabad airport to take the flight back to your home country.

Snow Lake hispar la trek is simply amazing. The stunning scenery, dramatic snow-dusted peaks, bright glaciers, impressive gorges, gushing waterfalls, and world-famous mountains will produce some great memories. We strongly believe that Snow Lake – Hispar La Trek in Pakistan will create a lifelong memory that will stay with you for a long time.

Trango Adventure has several fixed departures for the Snow Lake – Hispar La trek in the summer. Contact us for more information about the Snow Lake trek.

INTERNAL FLIGHTS

Skardu Flight

Skardu and Gilgit are weather-dependent airports. These airports are located in narrow valleys, surrounded by high mountains, so planes can only land there in clear weather and with good visibility. Flights to and from Skardu and Gilgit are never guaranteed. However, flights do go to Skardu and Gilgit regularly, but cancellations do occur occasionally. Should the flight be cancelled, you will drive on the Karakoram Highway.

Health & Vaccination

Contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require vaccinations or other preventive measures. Should be up to date with routine courses and boosters recommended in the United Kingdom and other developed countries, including hepatitis A, typhoid, diphtheria-tetanus-polio, and measles-mumps-rubella. Malarial prophylaxis is discretionary for this trip. Malaria exists in the area around Islamabad and Rawalpindi. However, the chances of urban transmission of malaria are low. In Skardu, Askole, and Hunza, there is no Malaria risk. On this holiday, you should also have a dentist check-up.

Insurance

We highly recommend having travel insurance for the Snow Lake hispar la Trek in Pakistan. Trango Adventure Pakistan understands the complexity and variety of choices available in the insurance market. However, it is necessary to have an insurance policy that can cover any unexpected medical expenses abroad.

Although travel insurance is not compulsory to take part in our Snow Lake hispar la trek, it is only a recommendation. When you take an insurance policy, make sure your insurer is aware of your Adventure itinerary and can agree to cover the activities you will be taking in Pakistan.

Altitude

Snow Lake – Hispar La trek in Pakistan involves trekking and walking in high-altitude areas. During the Snow Lake trek, you will reach an altitude of 4,000 meters for 1-2 days. You don’t need to worry about this because the human body can adapt to a wide range of heights, but we must follow some simple rules to acclimate successfully. Before coming on this snow lake trek, you should get advice on Tours and trekking at high altitudes.

Climate

From mid-June to August, we can expect to encounter temperatures as high as 40°C in Islamabad and Gilgit, and 25°C in the Baltistan region. The weather is generally good in Karakoram throughout the summer, with clear blue skies and little rain or snow. However, the weather in these mountain areas is difficult to predict, and short-lived storms can occur at any time.

A passport with six months of remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required to visit Pakistan. The information that we provide is for United Kingdom passport holders. Contact your nearest Pakistan embassy or consulate in your country for information. You are responsible for the correct travel documents and visas for your trekking holiday in Pakistan. Visa requirements and charges can change without notice.

Pakistan Visa

All foreign nationalities require a visa to enter Pakistan. The visa fee is approximately $50, and you must apply for it before departure. To obtain a tourist visa to visit Pakistan, you need a letter of introduction from an approved tour operator in Pakistan. Trango Adventures will send you the letter of introduction before you apply for the visa. Visa applications can be made ONLINE or in person at one of the 5 application centres in London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Bradford.

Note: if you are planning to continue your tour to China, India, or Iran, then you must get a visa for those countries from your home country before you depart from Pakistan.

Equipment List

As a general rule, you should always try to keep the weight of equipment to a minimum. The packed weight of your trek bag whilst trekking, including your sleeping bag and mattress, should be no more than 20 kgs. We followed the limit and weighed the bags before setting off on the trek. Anything not required on the Snow Lake trek can be left at the group hotel in Islamabad.

We will send you a detailed list closer to your Holiday departure.

Our Guide, Sualimain was waiting for us at Isb airport, from there onwards, he took care of everything. We just laid back and enjoyed our Snow lake trek without being worry about anything. Snow lake – Hispar la trek provides breath taking scenery and pure wilderness. Thank you Trango and Huge thanks to Sulaiman.
Will visit again soon for another adventure.
All the best.

My concept was to explorer deep into one of the world’s most undiscovered countries to meet the locals, trek On the Glaciers, Detour From Baltistan into Hunza Valley, and sleep under the Stars. If you want a unique trip that you will remember for a lifetime, then Snow lake and Hispar la trek is what you are looking for! My trip with Trango Adventure on Snow Lake and Hispar La Trek was simply amazing.
