How to trek to K2 base camp?
K2 is the world’s second-highest mountain at an altitude of 8,611 meters (28,251 feet ) above sea level. It is located in the Karakoram mountain range of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. Trekking to the base camp of K2 is considered one of the world’s Great treks. As a local Mountain guide, I have been trekking to K2 Base Camp for the last 30 years. Born in the Karakoram Mountains and being a mountain guide, I got to know the Karakoram Mountains inside out. I will share tips and information on how to do a K2 Base Camp trek.
Why is K2 called K2?
K2 (8,611m) was discovered in 1856 by Col. T.G. Montgomerie during the survey of India. It was called K2 because it was the second peak measured in the Karakoram Mountains range. K2 is also known as Goodwin Austin Peak and Chogori in the local Balti Language. K2 rises steeply from Baltoro Glacier at about 4,570 metres (15,000 feet), making it one of the most difficult mountains to climb.
What is the K2 base camp?
K2 Base Camp is a campsite at the bottom of K2, a safe place out of the fall line of avalanches. It is where K2 climbing teams set up their tents and make a base for communication and supplies while climbing this mountain. K2 base camp is one of the biggest base camps for mountaineers who want to conquer this majestic Peak.
Where is the K2 base camp?
K2 Base Camp is in the Karakoram mountain range of Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. Gilgit Baltistan is in the northern region of Pakistan, bordering China and India. You can reach the K2 base camp by trekking from Askole, which takes 7-8 days to walk. Askole is the last civilisation of the valley before you start your trekking journey to K2 Base Camp.
What is the altitude of the K2 base camp?
K2 Base Camp sits at an altitude of 5,117 meters (16,785 ft). K2 Base Camp is the summer home of International mountain climbers who want to scale this mighty mountain. You need to be fully acclimatised before you reach the base camp. Your acclimatisation session begins as soon as you land in Skardu (2,230 m), rest at Rdukas and gradually trek up to Concordia. We have carefully selected the K2 trek itinerary so the altitude change over the trek is spread out quite a lot, as in the beginning it is slow going, walking up the valley and gaining height gradually. Most people do not even notice the altitude.

What is the typical day and night temperature on the K2 base camp trek?
During the K2 Base Camp trek in the Karakoram Mountains and the Baltoro region, temperatures typically range from -4°C to -6°C in the evening and 15°C to 20°C during the day.
Rain is rare in these mountains during summer, but you should be prepared for sudden snowfall and thunderstorms. The monsoon does not affect the Karakoram region.
Temperature Range in June and July:
- Lower Valleys (e.g., Askole, 3,000m)
- Day: 20–30°C (68–86°F)
- Night: 10–15°C (50–59°F)
- Midway Camps (e.g., Urdukas, 4,000m)
- Day: 10–20°C (50–68°F)
- Night: 0–5°C (32–41°F)
- Higher Camps (e.g., Concordia & K2 Base Camp, 5,000m+)
- Day: 5–15°C (41–59°F)
- Night: -10 to -5°C (14–23°F)
Cold Nights – When to Expect Them
- The nights will gradually get colder as you gain altitude.
- Expect mild nights in the first few days but freezing conditions from Urdukas onward.
By the time you reach Concordia and K2 Base Camp, temperatures in the evening will likely be well below freezing.
You do not need a gaiter, micro spikes/crampons for the K2 Base Camp trek. We recommend using a sleeping bag that is rated at least -14 for the K2 Base Camp trek.
No need to cover the shoes; thongs/slides with warm socks will be fine.
K2 base camp trek difficulty – How fit do I need to be?
The K2 base camp trek is a mentally and physically demanding trek with a reward of spectacular mountain vistas throughout the journey. Some trekking and hiking experience is essential, as you will be walking on the rocky surfaces of the Baltoro Glacier for a few days. You do not need climbing skills or mountaineering equipment to complete the K2 trek. As with so many things in life, preparation is the main key. Make sure you go out for walks in hilly areas, do swimming and cycling, etc, before joining this trip. We had many elderly clients who had completed this trek, including an 81-year-old lady. The trek can always be modified to suit less experienced trekkers. How long does it take to get to the K2 base camp?
The K2 base camp distance is 90 kilometres from Askole, the last village of Shigar Valley, and it takes 7 to 9 walking days to reach the base camp. Askole is reachable by jeep from Skardu, an 8-hour drive covering a distance of 126 kilometres from Skardu, the region’s capital. Generally, the K2 trek is completed within 20 to 22 days from Islamabad to Islamabad, though it can take longer or shorter depending on your experience
