Our Nangma Valley Trek starts from Islamabad. Islamabad international airport is the nearest international airport to arrive at to start trekking holidays in the Karakoram mountain range of Pakistan. Our representative will meet and greet you at Islamabad International Airport and then transfer you to the group hotel. The rest of the day in Islamabad is reserved for recovery from your long flight. In the afternoon, we will meet for a briefing about the Nangma Valley trek.
The journey to Nangma Valley begins with a scenic flight to Skardu, offering breathtaking views of Nanga Parbat, K2, and other majestic peaks of the Himalayas and Karakoram. Upon arrival in Skardu, you’ll check into your hotel and enjoy a day of rest, acclimatisation, and preparation for the trek ahead.
Skardu is the capital of the Baltistan region of Pakistan and serves as the gateway to the mighty K2, Gondogoro La, Broad Peak, Masherbrum, Gasherbrum, and many other famous Karakoram peaks. Trekkers and climbers usually make their final purchases and top-ups for their journey here. In Skardu, explore serene lakes like Shangrila and Upper Kachura, historic forts such as Skardu Fort and Kharpocho Fort, and the ancient Buddha Rock, all set against stunning Karakoram and Himalayan backdrops. This makes it a perfect start for your Nangma Valley trek.
After spending two days in Skary, take a jeep ride along the mighty Indus River to the picturesque town of Khaplu. Crossing the Indus and Shyok Rivers, the route winds through dramatic gorges and valleys before reaching Khaplu, a charming town surrounded by lush fields and snow-covered peaks. Known for its historic Khaplu Palace and Chaqchan Mosque, Khaplu is a cultural gem of Baltistan and a gateway to some of the best trekking in Pakistan, including the Hushe and Nangma Valleys.
The following day, the drive continues to Kanday Village, the starting point of the Nangma Valley trek. From here, begin a short but rewarding walk to Mingulu Broq, a beautiful meadow surrounded by majestic granite peaks. The trail passes through fertile fields and traditional Balti hamlets, offering glimpses of local life. Cross rustic wooden bridges over glacial streams and enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature. Upon reaching Mingulu Broq, set up camp amidst stunning mountain scenery and spend the evening relaxing in this tranquil alpine setting.
The next day, continue trekking toward the Nangma Valley Base Camp, a breathtaking site surrounded by towering rock spires and hanging glaciers. This section of the Nangma Valley trek offers incredible views of iconic peaks such as the Great Tower, Grey Tower, Changi Tower, and the elegant King and Son Peaks. The valley is famous among climbers and photographers for its dramatic granite walls and pristine wilderness. Spend the night at the base camp, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of this untouched part of the Karakoram.
The next stage of the adventure takes you from Nangma Base Camp to Amin Brakk Base Camp, home to one of the world’s most impressive rock towers, the legendary Amin Brakk (also called the Great Tower). Along the way, enjoy sweeping views of Drefekhar Peak, Kodra Peak, Brak Zang Peak, and Nawaz Brakk, each rising sharply above the green meadows and wildflower-dotted slopes. After exploring this spectacular landscape, return to Nangma Base Camp for another night under the stars, surrounded by the grandeur of the Karakoram range.
After visiting the Nangma valley, we’ll head back to Islamabad by following our footsteps. The descent back to Kanday Village is equally rewarding, with views of high peaks, alpine meadows, and local shepherds guiding their flocks along the trails. Spend the evening in a local guesthouse or camp, experiencing the warmth and hospitality of the Balti people.
From Kanday, drive through Khaplu Valley and follow the Shyok and Indus Rivers back to Skardu. Enjoy the comfort of your hotel, a hot shower, and a well-earned rest after days of trekking through one of Pakistan’s most scenic valleys.
When the weather permits, take a spectacular flight from Skardu to Islamabad, once again passing by Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth-highest mountain. Back in the capital, enjoy free time for shopping, exploring cultural landmarks such as the Faisal Mosque and Lok Virsa Museum, or simply relaxing.
If flights are delayed due to weather, the journey continues overland via the Karakoram Highway, one of the world’s most scenic drives, following the mighty Indus River down to Islamabad.
After a farewell dinner with your trekking companions, you’ll be transferred to Islamabad International Airport for your return flight home, marking the end of an unforgettable “Nangma Valley Trek”, a true hidden gem of trekking in Pakistan.

Internal flights
Skardu flight
Skardu Valley is a place where tall mountains surround the airport. Aeroplanes can only land there when the weather is clear and easy to see. Usually, planes can fly to the Skardu Valley without any problems. But sometimes, the flights can get cancelled if the weather is extremely bad.
However, there is some good news! Skardu Airport has upgraded to an international airport with GPS technology. This means that the chances of flights getting cancelled are much lower now.
Skardu Airport was upgraded to international status and underwent a re-inauguration on December 2, 2021, following extensive enhancements aimed at transforming it into a prominent tourism hub. The airport now facilitates direct flights from Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Dubai. Since the upgrades, flight cancellations have significantly decreased, and cancellation chances are now low. Last summer, we had only one flight cancellation, and our clients had to travel by road on KKH. While we travel on KKH, we avoid travelling through the areas not recommended by the UK and US foreign offices.
In case of flight cancellation, you will travel on the Karakorum Highway to Naran for a night stay, and the next day continue your journey to arrive in Skardu. Islamabad to Naran distance is 281 km and a 9-hour drive. Naran to Skardu is a 10-hour drive on the Karakoram highway along the mighty Gilgit and Indus rivers. Travelling by road on the Karakoram Highway is as spectacular as taking a flight.
Health & vaccination
You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you specifically require any vaccinations or other preventive measures. You must have your routine courses and boosters as recommended in your home country. Diphtheria, tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella, along with hepatitis A and typhoid. Malaria exists in the area around Islamabad and Rawalpindi. However, incidences of urban transmission of malaria are extremely low. In Gilgit Baltistan and the mountains, there is no malaria risk.
We recommend having a dental check-up, as you will spend most of your time in remote areas.
Travel Health Pro is an online resource for more detailed information. Dengue fever is a known risk in Rawalpindi. We recommend you take precautions to avoid getting mosquito bites.
Insurance
We highly recommend you have adequate travel insurance for your trekking holiday with Trango Adventure. An insurance premium to cover trip cancellations, flight cancellations, luggage loss, medical costs and heli rescue from high altitude. We understand that many options are available in the insurance market, and choosing the right one can be complex. However, it is essential to have a policy that covers the above items.
Before purchasing a policy, inform the insurance company of your base camp trek itinerary to ensure that they can cover the activities you will be undertaking.
While travel insurance is not mandatory for joining the trek, we strongly advise that you have an insurance policy that covers the activities you will be doing during the Base Camp Trek.
