K2 Base Camp Packing List
Are you preparing to trek to K2 base camp or another epic trek in the Karakoram Mountains of Pakistan? If so, you might be searching for a comprehensive packing checklist. Packing the proper clothing, equipment, and supplies for your K2 base camp trek will go a long way in ensuring you have a great trekking experience in Pakistan.
As you pack your gear for K2 Base Camp, remember that we divide your items into two packs:
- Your Day pack, which you will carry each day as you trek
- Your duffel bag: our porters will carry it between camps.
All extra luggage can be left at the hotel in Skardu before you begin your trek.
At the start of every morning, your porters will take your duffel and carry it up to the next camp. It will be difficult or impossible to access your gear from your duffel bag until the evening when you arrive at your campsite. It means you should pack anything you may need each day during your trek in your daypack. However, to make your daily hiking easier, you must keep your daypack as light as possible, so you only carry the essentials. It includes water, snacks, a camera, a headlamp, a poncho, extra layers, and sun creams.

Packing Clothes for Layering for K2 Base Camp
Layering is essential when you’re trekking at K2 Base Camp. As elevation changes while trekking in the Karakoram mountains and night falls, you’ll experience temperature fluctuation. If you are going in May, September or October, you should expect cold weather. As you gain elevation, it gets progressively colder at Concordia, and the K2 Base Camp can be below freezing any time of year. It’s best to come fully prepared for cold temperatures and bring a few extra layers just to be safe. Layering your clothing lets you easily regulate your body temperature by adding or removing layers or simply unzipping.
The base layer is the first layer of clothing you must put on. It is an essential layer in the cold as it helps your body maintain a steady temperature by providing extra insulation and wicking away perspiration.
Look for fabrics like Capilene or Merino Wool. Avoid cotton if possible, as cotton materials will absorb moisture and defeat the purpose of the base layer.
A middle layer serves as your insulating layer. The best option for your middle layer on the K2 Base Camp Trek is a thick-down jacket or fleece jacket. Find a jacket that is easy to zip and unzip so you can more easily regulate temperature without having to take the jacket off or put it back on as temperatures fluctuate.
Your outer shell layer protects you from the elements. The best material for your outer shell layer is Gore-Tex, which is known for being breathable and waterproof. Alternatively, a nylon jacket or a plastic poncho is a cheaper option, but the downside is that these materials trap moisture, which makes it more difficult for your body to regulate temperature.
Packing Hats, Gloves and Gaithers for K2 Base Camp
On a warm and sunny day, a wide-brimmed hat is recommended to protect your face from the sun’s rays. Bring a wool hat or a Balaclava to cover your ears from the cold in cold temperatures. Sun protection is essential at high altitudes, so supplement your hat with face sunscreen, sunglasses, and a bandana or neck gaiter to protect against the sun’s rays.
With gloves, it’s also essential to apply the principle of layering. Bring a lightweight glove or glove liner, as well as heavier wool or down gloves. The liners can be worn without insulated gloves on top when it’s cool weather, but not cold enough for thick gloves. When temperatures drop, wear these liners underneath heavier wool or down gloves or mittens to help provide added insulation.
Thin gloves or liners can keep your skin protected from chilly air when performing tasks such as tying shoelaces.
Gaiters are recommended while travelling in May or September, but can also be useful at other times on the trail. Gaiters cover the ankle-high opening of your boots and up your calves. It prevents snow, water, mud, rocks, or dust from getting into your shoes. You will likely be walking through snow. Gaiters are also a great help to protect your feet and clothing from gathering dust on the trail.

Which Hiking boots to wear on K2 Base Camp
The best option for footwear on the K2 Base Camp Trek is to bring a pair of broken-in hiking boots for the trek. You must also bring a lighter-weight shoe that you simply wear in the evening after trekking.
Your choice of footwear depends on your personal preference. If you usually hike in tennis shoes, you can not do the same trek to K2 base camp, as the trail is uneven with a lot of rock on the surface of the Baltoro Glacier.
Having comfortable and broken-in shoes is extremely important. You can get plenty of hiking gear in Islamabad and Skardu for a reasonable price before your K2 Base Camp trek. We recommend purchasing your hiking boots in your home country beforehand, with a lot of time to break them in ahead of your trek.
Buying boots that are too small in size is one of the common mistakes people make when packing for trekking to K2 Base Camp. Ideally, your trekking boot must have extra room for socks, but not be so loose-fitting that your heel slips while you are hiking on Baltoro Glacier.
If you get a blister or your feet are feeling uncomfortable, it’s best to stop as soon as possible and take care of the situation before it becomes a real problem. Try a lightweight sock-liner in addition to heavier socks, or wear two pairs of cotton socks to minimise the friction. If this does not resolve the issue, you can place some duct tape or moleskin over the area where you think a potential blister might develop.
A combination of lightweight sock liners made of a material like Capilene and a wool sock is the best option when choosing a pair of socks. Cotton socks will also work, but make sure to bring a fresh pair of socks every day. A good rule of thumb is to have enough underwear and socks to change every day, even if you wear the same pants the entire trek.
If you are doing the K2 and Gondogoro La Trek or the Snow Lake trek, crampons are recommended for crossing the passes. It is highly likely that during the peak trekking months, there is ALWAYS a possibility of snow and ice on all treks in Pakistan. Most likely, these will be used, and picking up a pair of these will help you prepare for the worst. These are simple slip-on spikes that attach securely to your hiking shoes and require no special buckles or straps to attach (not to be confused with crampons).
Which type of sleeping bag to bring for the K2 Base Camp
Although you will be sleeping in Tents, these accommodations get very cold at night. Your best bet is to bring your sleeping bag or purchase one in Skardu. We will be happy to arrange any other items you may want to hire in Skardu.
Trango Adventures can arrange high-altitude sleeping bags for USD 55 when you trek with us. (You may also rent down jackets for $40 on request.) Hotels in Skardu and Islamabad will provide a mattress covered by a sheet as well as a pillow. You can always ask for an extra blanket and pillow in most hotels.
Choose a high-quality sleeping bag that is rated at least -18°C/ 0°F. We also recommend bringing a good-quality roll-up mattress to use under the sleeping bag and a travel pillow or pillowcase for comfort and improved personal hygiene.

Carry your gear
The flight from Islamabad to Skardu has a strict weight limit of 20 kg for check-in luggage and 7 kg for hand luggage, which means that at this portion of the trip, you should only bring what you will use on the trek. You’re allowed to bring the main pack (duffle bag), which can weigh 20 kg. Porters will carry the duffel bag up the mountain. You must bring a daypack that can hold 6 kg (12lbs) or less.
We also suggest bringing several dry bags to pack shoes, wet clothes, or dirty laundry and keeping them in the duffle pack.
What toiletries should you pack for the K2 base camp trek?
When you’re packing toiletries for the K2 base camp, remember that you have weight constraints for the aeroplane to Skardu and porters. Bring the essentials, and bring only the items that you need. When you trek with Trango Adventures, our team carries a first aid kit on the trek, but there are some items you should plan on packing, including Tylenol/Ibuprofen, Diamox, blister treatments, and more. See above for our comprehensive packing list for K2 Base Camp.
Paperwork and money
You should bring enough money to buy snacks and beverages in Islamabad and Skardu, as well as any toiletries or other items you may have forgotten to pack. In Islamabad and Skardu, you can find ATMs. If you had a great time on the K2 base camp, your porters and guide will appreciate a tip that is best given in Johla at the end of the trek before you drive back to Skardu.
GEAR YOU CAN BUY or HIRE IN SKARDU
Don’t have all the gear you need on the K2 Base Camp packing list?
Skardu can be a great place to buy or hire good-quality, inexpensive gear. However, we do not recommend purchasing hiking shoes in Skardu before your trek, as you should allow plenty of time to break in your shoes beforehand—nothing dampens a Trek faster than sore, blistered feet!
Skardu is a good place to buy new and used trekking gear and equipment. Because of the mountaineering community in the Gilgit Baltistan region, you can find virtually everything you might need for the trek at a reasonable price. However, you must be careful to avoid low-cost knockoffs.
Before purchasing any trekking items, make sure the zipper works and is of sturdy construction. Look at the stitching and make sure it is good quality, even, and not separating. If you are buying a pack, pay particular attention to where the straps attach, and it’s well-stitched and strong.
If you want brand-name gear or top-quality items, Skardu might not be the place to buy these items. But if you would like to save a lot and have good-quality equipment, it’s a great option.
What are we forgetting?
The great thing about trekking in Pakistan is that if you forget something, you can easily hire or borrow it along the way. Skardu Bazaar, which you reach on the second evening of the trek, has numerous shops selling sporting goods and souvenirs. Skardu Bazaar also hosts several pharmacies and bookstores.
Further along the trek, you will not find any place to buy jackets, medicine, snacks, or books, so make sure to complete your K2 base camp packing list in Skardu. Keep in mind that the higher you get on the mountain, the less chance to purchase any items. Your best option is to purchase in Skardu anything you may have forgotten to pack!
It is essential to have all the right items in your “K2 base camp packing list”. It will help you tolerate the challenges during the trek and enjoy your experience much more.
