Gilgit is the administrative capital city of the Gilgit Baltistan region. It is also a getaway to China. You will spend one night in Gilgit, then continue your journey to Karimabad. Karimabad lies along the Karakoram Highway above a hill. It is the capital of the modern Hunza Valley. Hunza Valley’s natural splendour and position on the central Asian silk route has attracted travellers, merchants, and mountaineers for many centuries. Beyond its iconic glaciers, fertile apricot farms, and turquoise lakes, this region is rich in cultural heritage.
Explore the local Bazar in Karimabad and visit the UNESCO-listed 700-year-old Baltit and Altit forts. The historical Baltit Fort stands on an artificially flattened spur below the Ulter Glacier. Located on a commanding view of the Hunza Valley and its region, its inhabitants controlled the seasonal trans-Karakuram trade between South and Central Asia. The Baltit Fort is rectangular with 3 floors and stands on a high stone, whilst the ground floor consists mainly of storage chambers and the first floor is oriented around as an open hall.
After exploring the ancient Hunza valley, you will travel towards Skardu to continue your Gilgit Baltistan Tour in the Baltistan region. Skardu is the administrative capital of the Baltistan region, located at the elevation of 2,500 metres above sea level, along the bank of the Indus River, which separates the Karakoram Range from the Himalayas.
Skardu is also the getaway to world-famous peaks, K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, Masherbrum, Spantik, Hispar Glacier, Trango Towers, Baltoro Glacier, and Concordia. In Skardu, you will explore the local Bazar, visit the Buda rock, walk to Kharpocho Fort, and experience an ancient style Polo match.
After Spending Two nights in Skardu, you will travel to Khaplulu by following the famous Indus and then the Shyok River to arrive in Khaplu. Khaplu is one of the largest and most beautiful Balti towns in Baltistan, which lies along the Shyok River. The inhabitants of Khaplu and Skardu speak the Balti language, which is similar to the Tibetan language. Before the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, Baltistan was part of Tibet and Kargil Ladakh. The architecture, local tradition, food and culture are similar to Tibet.
In Khapulu, you will explore the local Bazar and visit the historical Chaqchan Mosque. Chaqchan mosque was built in 1370, one of the oldest in the Gilgit Baltistan region, and dates from the time when the inhabitants of this region converted from Buddhism to Islam. The architecture of Chaqchan mosque is a perfect blend of Tibetan, Mughal and Persian styles. This construction style is one of the oldest, known for making a weatherproof structure, and it is also suitable for harsh winter conditions.
After visiting Khaplu, you will head back to Skardu via Shigar Valley. You will have lunch in Shigar Fort (Serena Hotel) then drive back to Skardu for the night stay.
The following morning you will continue your Gilgit Baltistan Tour towards Astore via Deosai Plain. Deosai is the second-highest Plateau and home to the Himalayan brown bears. Night stay in Astore.
Wake up to a spectacular sunrise view over the Karakoram mountains, have your breakfast and continue your journey back to Islamabad. Night stay in Islamabad, and the next day you will be transferred to Islamabad airport for your flight back home.

Welcome to Pakistan. Most of the international flights arrive at Islamabad International Airport in the morning. Your Guide will meet and greet you at the airport, and then transfer you to the hotel. The rest of the day is free to recover from your journey. Later in the day, when everyone has arrived, we will have a group briefing about the Gilgit Baltistan tour. Depending on the time available to us, there may be an option to do some sightseeing in Islamabad, a purpose-built City in 1961 as the new capital of Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD TO NARAN/CHILAS (461 km) 8 HOURS DRIVE
After breakfast, you will start your Gilgit Baltistan tour towards Naran town. You will travel on the famous Karakoram Highway and pass through some historic towns and cities to reach Mansehra. From Mansehra, You will leave Karakoram Highway and turn right to join Naran Road along the Naran river to reach Naran town. Naran town lies along the Naran River, which is popular among domestic tourists because of its cooler temperature and greenery.
Night stay in Naran, enjoy a good night’s sleep as the temperature here will be much cooler compared to Islamabad.

Today, you will continue your Gilgit Baltistan tour towards Gilgit. You will drive on Naran road, cross Babusar Pass and rejoin the Karakoram Highway. Driving on The Karakoram Highway along the mighty Indus River provides a beautiful experience; you will see magnificent peaks and valleys, rivers, and glaciers. Twenty-one of the world’s one hundred highest peaks are visible from the Karakoram Highway and the journey is a great introduction to the mountains as civilization slips away behind us.
You will arrive in Gilgit early in the afternoon, the rest of the afternoon is to explore the city. Gilgit is the capital and the biggest city of the Gilgit Baltistan region of Pakistan.

GILGIT TO KARIMABAD (102 km) 3 HOURS DRIVE
After spending a night in Gilgit, today you will rejoin the Karakoram Highway to Hunza Valley. We pass through beautiful small villages with many happy faces. We will have quick stops and tea breaks along the way to Karimabad. Rakaposhi’s viewpoint on the side of The Karakoram Highway will be the highlight of the day. A quick stopover or a short tea break is possible at the viewpoint of Rakaposhi then continue to Karimabad. We will arrive in Karimabad around lunchtime, the rest of the afternoon is at leisure to explore the beautiful Karimabad town.

Rise and shine early to experience a spectacular sunrise view over the Rakaposhi mountain. Karimabad is the ancient capital of Hunza Valley, it is the gateway to many other mountain valleys and a great place to unwind for a day. Wander the cobblestone streets, bargain for rubies and handicrafts, feast on Hunza cuisine, get to grips with the dark history of 700-year-old UNESCO-listed Baltit Fort, take a peek at the Silk route from Altit Fort and watch the sunset over the river below.
Later in the afternoon, you will travel to a place called Eagle Nest which provides a magnificent bird view of Hunza Valley. You have the option to have your dinner there so, you can enjoy a breathtaking sunset view over the Rakaposhi mountain.

KARIMABAD TO KHUNJERAB PASS (4,880 meters) 3 HOURS DRIVE
Today, you are off on an epic adventure. Travelling by minibus/Jeep, you will drive towards Khunjerab Pass. Khunjerab Pass is the trade border between China and Pakistan. The scenery from the road is truly incredible, and we will make frequent stops for photos and chai. Set in a craggy bowl of mountains and surrounded by glaciers, this is a truly breathtaking landscape steeped in history.
After visiting the pass, we will return to Passu for the night stay.

HUNZA TO SKARDU (286 km) 7 HOURS DRIVE
After breakfast you will continue your Gilgit Baltistan tour by following the famous Karakoram Highway with the view of Rakaposhi in the background. The road gradually gains height, but one does not feel it until you reach Alam Bridge. After 3 hours drive, at Alam Bridge, you will leave Karakoram Highway behind, and follow the Indus River to reach Skardu. Along the Indus River, many small villages are laden with fruits like apricots, cherries, and apple trees. You will be making a few stops along the way for tea breaks and purchase some fresh fruits from the locals.

SKARDU (2,230 meters)
Skardu is the administrative capital of Baltistan Valley. Baltistan was one of the oldest Himalayan kingdoms before being incorporated into Pakistan.
After breakfast, you will take a half-hour drive to Sadpara Lake to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of this natural, crystal-clear water lake surrounded by the pillars of The Karakoram mountains. Sadpara Lake is the main source of drinking water for the whole of Skardu town.
After visiting Sadpara Lake, you will explore the historical Manthal Buddha Rock. A large picture of Buddha was engraved on a big granite rock in the 8th century. This is the evidence of Buddhism in the area before the arrival of Islam in the 17th century.
You will have lunch at the famous upper Kachura Lake then visit the lower Kachura Lake before driving back to your hotel. Dinner will be served in your hotel restaurant.

SKARDU TO KHAPLU, (103 km) 2-3 HOURS DRIVE
Today, you will continue your Gilgit Baltistan tour towards Khaplu. You will travel along the Indus and Shyok rivers, passing through some lush green balti villages to arrive in Khaplu. Khaplu was the second-largest kingdom in the old Baltistan of the Yabgo dynasty. It guarded the trade route to Ladakh along the famous Shyok River. In Khaplu you will be staying at the ex-royal palace (now Serena Hotel). The ex-Royal Palace, Khaplu Fort has now turned into a Luxury Hotel.

After spending the night in the ex-Royal palace, you will head out to visit the local Bazar, explore the town and see the 700 years-old Chaqchan Mosque. Chaqchan Mosque, Dating from 1,370, is one of the oldest in the region, it dates from the time when the area’s populace converted en masse from Buddhism to Islam. Chaqchan Mosque remains open (except Friday prayer time) 24 hours and seven days a week.

KHAPLU TO SKARDU VIA SHIGAR 2-3 HOURS DRIVE
Follow the Shyok, Indus than Shigar River to reach Shigar. Shigar is a lush green Valley and it is the getaway to K2 and many famous treks and peaks. In Shigar, you will visit the historical Shigar Fort, which is now turned into a museum and Luxury hotel (Serena Hotel). It belongs to the same brand as Khaplu Palace Hotel. You will have a nice lunch in the royal garden before driving to Skardu. You have the option to spend the night in Shigar Fort or the same hotel in Skardu.

ASTORE TO ISLAMABAD (461 km) 9 HOURS DRIVE
Wake up early to witness a breathtaking sunrise view over the Karakoram mountains and Nanga Parbat. Enjoy your last breakfast in this mountain valley and continue your Gilgit Baltistan tour towards Islamabad.
Drive on Astore Road along the Astore River to the junction point of Karakoram Highway. Cross the bridge and turn left to join the famous Karakoram highway for a short while, then turn left to take Naran Road towards Naran. Naran Road will take you through Babusar Pass and Naran Valley to Mansehra.
You will rejoin the Karakoram Highway in Mansehra and continue your journey to Islamabad via some culturally rich and historical towns of Abbottabad, Hasan Abdal, and Taxila. Taxila is an important archaeological site of ancient India, situated about 32 km north-west of Islamabad. The origin of Taxila as a city goes back to c.1000 BCE. Some ruins at Taxila date to the time of the Achaemenid Empire in the 6th century BCE.
You will arrive in Islamabad late in the afternoon. Dinner will be served in your hotel restaurant, make sure to treat yourself with traditional Pakistani cuisine to celebrate the last evening of your Gilgit Baltistan tour in Pakistan.

During the Gilgit Baltistan tour, the group will spend all night in a good international tourist standard hotel. Accommodation at each of those hotels is twin-sharing with en-suite facilities. If you are traveling by yourself you will be paired with another single client of the same sex. It is possible to hire a single room for an additional cost. INTERNAL FLIGHTS
SKARDU FLIGHTS
Skardu is a weather-dependent airport. Since the valley is surrounded by high mountains, planes can only land here in good visibility and this means flights to and from Skardu are never guaranteed. Luckily, the weather in Pakistan is usually pleasant and planes do fly to Skardu very often. Should the flight be cancelled, the journey will be taken by road to Naran and then to Skardu.
HEALTH & VACCINATION
You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you specifically require any vaccinations or other preventive measures. You should be up to date with all the routine courses and boosters as recommended in the United Kingdom, United States and other developed countries, (diphtheria-tetanus-polio and measles-mumps-rubella), along with hepatitis A and typhoid. Malarial prophylaxis is discretionary for this trip. Malaria exists in the area around Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Incidences of urban transmission of malaria diseases are very low. In Gilgit Baltistan and the mountain valleys, there is no malaria risk.
It is recommended to have a dentist check-up in more remote areas in Pakistan. One of the good online resources is Travel Health Pro. Dengue fever is present around Islamabad, it is a tropical viral illness spread by daytime biting from mosquitoes. At the moment there are no vaccines or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes during the daytime. Keep a mosquito spray or a cream with you all the time as a precaution.

ALTITUDE
The Gilgit Baltistan tour involves going to high altitudes. During your trip, you will be above 2,200 meters for 1-2 days. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but we must follow some simple rules to acclimatise successfully. Before joining the Gilgit Baltistan tour, you should get some basic advice on tours at high altitudes.
CLIMATE
From mid-June to August, we can expect to encounter temperatures as high as 38°C at Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Chilas, and 30°C in The Gilgit Baltistan region. PASSPORT & VISAS
A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay in Pakistan is generally required. The information that we provide is for the nationals of the United Kingdom. PAKISTAN VISA
All nationalities require a visa. The visa fee is approximately £60 and you must apply for it before departure. To obtain a visa for Pakistan you will require a letter of introduction from an approved agency which will be provided by Trango Adventure. Visa applications can be made in person OR online.
